GUNS AND POLITICS
COLFO (The New Zealand Council of Licensed Firearms Owners Inc) today issued a warning against the policies of Labour and Alliance. As part of an ongoing campaign to warn the massive firearms community, estimated to be some 450,000 people, that the policies of Labour and Alliance are likely to lead to confiscation of firearms which has already occurred in Australia and Great Britain.
Mr Michael Reeves, COLFO President said "the legitimate firearms owners are sick and tired of being made scapegoats for successive government's failure to get tough on criminals and for the blatant inadequate funding of mental health services".
COLFO has also instigated a nationwide public notice campaign to bring the policies of Labour and Alliance to the attention of the firearms owners.
This action is in response to the following two quotes: "Labour proposes to register your firearms to better regulate their accumulation and disposal". Alliance MP, Matt Robson, considers that "once we know where the guns are we can think about why we need some of them". Michael Reeves said "whilst COLFO will not be providing direction to the firearms community as to who they should vote for, it is clear ACT opposes the likes of registration. ACT says "it is feel good nonsense that will do nothing to keep New Zealanders safe in their homes or on our streets". National has maintained a moderate position with the exception of a call for registration of firearms. It is COLFO's view that gun control is not crime control. When proposed laws focus on the criminals and law breakers, COLFO are the most ardent supporters".
