A think tank for the knowledge economy gets underway

The newly formed Science and Innovation Advisory Council (SIAC), will act as a “think tank for the knowledge economy” said founding Chair, Rick Christie at the Prime Minister’s launch of the Council in Wellington today.

“I welcome the Government’s initiative in setting up the Council, and seeking diverse views on the best way to get science and innovation working for New Zealand,” Mr Christie said.

Mr Christie, Chief Executive of investment company Rangatira Ltd, said the nine members named today were involved in many fields of science, business, technology, culture and Maori life.

Other members include John Blackham (XSol Ltd), former Christchurch Mayor Vicki Buck, Kate Frykberg (The Web), Donna Hiser (Innovus), Dr Michael Matthews (Tatua Dairy Co-op Ltd), Sir Angus Tait (Tait Electronics), Stephen Tindall (founder of The Warehouse), and leading Maori scientist Dr Michael Walker of University of Auckland.

“SIAC will consult with the community, develop innovation strategies for New Zealand and meet with the Prime Minister every three months. The Council members have excellent networks around New Zealand, and we will offer positive but realistic advice to Government on a range of issues,“ Mr Christie said.
