Boise Cascade Migrates From Informix To Oracle9i

News release:

Boise Cascade Migrates From Informix To Oracle9i Database

** Oracle's Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing Capabilities Are Deciding Factor **

New Zealand, May 24, -- Oracle Corp (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world's largest enterprise software company today announced that Boise Cascade Office Products, New Zealand's largest supplier of office products, has migrated from an Informix database to Oracle9i Database for the company's strategic business intelligence and data warehousing project. Boise Cascade Office Products, which operates under seven leading brands in New Zealand including OTC Workplace Partners, Whitcoulls Office Products, and Blue Star Office Products, chose Oracle9i Database because the technology -- with its additional business intelligence functionality -- best aligned with the company's Australasian IT strategy.

"We wanted a fully integrated solution that could deliver all three components of a data warehouse: the database engine, query and extraction functions, and a user-friendly interface," says Richard Van Rynbach, data warehouse manager for Boise Cascade. "We wanted to future-proof our business so that we could power more applications from the database over time."

Boise is currently building three data marts on Oracle9i Database designed to provide middle and senior management with timely and accurate information to facilitate informed decision-making. The three data marts will provide a comprehensive "snapshot" of inventory on-hand, order management status and sales.

"With inventory snapshots, we can identify slow moving stock, discontinued items, shelf life and turnover. The result is a detailed picture that reveals how to better manage and reduce our overall inventory holdings by using the most cost-effective approach. For example, we can encourage branches to hold a sale on a specific fax machine that has been slow to sell," says Van Rynbach.

The sales data mart is pivotal to Boise's business intelligence solution. "Using Oracle's data warehousing and business intelligence software, we can analyse and differentiate each sale according to branch, product and region," says Van Rynbach. "From this we can identify the most profitable customers and ensure they receive appropriate levels of service, which can range from account manager visits to customer service calls. The data mart allows managers to receive customised reports or 'build their own' queries so that information is always relevant to them."

Van Rynbach says that the next phase of the project involves the deployment to end-users.

"We will be working closely with staff to teach them how to use Oracle9i Database, and how to enhance everyday business operations using Business Intelligence tools."

Carol Lee Davidson, national manager, iPlatform Solutions for Oracle New Zealand, says she is pleased with how the implementation has gone so far, given the aggressive timeframes.

"Business Intelligence is fast gaining recognition as a critical business function, especially in these uncertain economic times," says Davidson.

"Boise will be able to view their operations on a daily basis, to understand their company's position on any given hour of any given day using Oracle9i Database's data warehousing capabilities."
