Avery Dennison builds innovative digital photo ID solution using Macromedia Technologies

Macromedia Flash and Director Power Visitor Management Software AUCKLAND, New Zealand - 30 September 2003 -

Macromedia Inc (Nasdaq: MACR) and Avery Dennison's worldwide office products group announced that Avery's new photo ID system uses Macromedia Flash and Director to provide a more effective and user-friendly experience to visitor management. The Avery Photo ID System provides businesses, government and other organisations with an easy to use "photographic memory" solution to register and track visitors. The new Avery Photo ID System allows front lobby personnel to register visitors quickly and efficiently, produce attractive color photo identification badges, keep a digital record of all facility visitors and maintain a more professional entrance or lobby. Organisations that still use traditional paper visitor logs can easily upgrade to this color identification and digital record-keeping system.

"The technology used for the Avery Photo ID System provides a professional alternative to paper-based visitor log books," said Michael Olenick, director, New Business Technology, Avery Dennison Worldwide Office Products. "The solution uses Macromedia products to reduce development time which enables us to apply technology that sets the standard for visitor management."

"Not only was this solution built with our products, but we have deployed the Avery Photo ID System throughout our San Francisco offices, where it has been met with tremendously positive reactions," said Norm Meyrowitz, president of products, Macromedia. "By combining Flash and Director, Avery's solution uses connected kiosks to simplify visitor management across the company and deliver a great experience in the process."

Fluid, a Macromedia alliance partner, developed the Avery Photo ID System for Avery Dennison. The user interface was authored and designed in Flash, which then runs in a Director application that provides local system access to a MySQL database and Tomcat application server. Flash provided Avery with an obvious cross-platform solution, which has built-in webcam support and browser support. The Director layer enables access to the native operating system, which provides greater print control, the ability to disable windowing features from the operating system, and integrates with external devices such as business card scanners. Fluid used Flash and the same kiosk code to develop a web-deployed version of the Avery solution.

The Avery Photo ID System Kit provides everything an organisation needs to start creating quality photo ID badges quickly, including software, web camera, bar code scanner, USB hub and sample photo ID badge supplies. The complete system kit has a suggested retail price of US$995. In addition to the kit, the new Avery line features an extensive line of badge supplies.

All products will be available through most office supply dealers. A demonstration of the new product line and more information is available at http://photoid.avery.com
