Non-GM Ingredients In Signature Range And Basics

Media release 6 November 2003

Non-Gm Ingredients In Signature Range And Basics

Progressive Enterprises wants to remind shoppers of its longstanding policy that its Signature Range and Basic house brands be made with ingredients from non-genetically modified sources.

The owner of Foodtown, Woolworths, Countdown and Price Chopper works actively with the manufacturers of its private label to ensure this.

These same products are sold in Progressive franchise stores, FreshChoice and SuperValue.

“Progressive is well aware of consumer concern about GM and for this reason we developed policies two years ago to source non-GM ingredients,” says managing director Ted van Arkel.

He says, “We are the market leader in this area. Our non-GM policy for private label brands was released in November 2001.”

Under Progressive Enterprises’ policy the company works with existing and potential suppliers to ensure none of the Signature Range and Basics products contain ingredients from genetically-modified crops.

The company also has a monitoring programme to provide added assurance that all products continue to meet Progressive’s requirements.

Mr van Arkel observes that it is good for all consumers that other supermarket operators are following suit.
