Media playback standard brings synergies to embedded device market

AUCKLAND New Zealand - 18 February 2004 - Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) and Samsung Electronics, the largest electronics firm in Korea and the world's fourth largest consumer electronics manufacturer, announced a strategic partnership to embed Macromedia Flash on Samsung Electronics SMT-7000 series set top boxes. The first two models from this series will begin shipping later this year.

"Macromedia Flash is the leading technology for delivering engaging multimedia experiences across various platforms and devices," said Anup Murarka, senior director of mobile and devices, Macromedia. "Working with leaders in the consumer electronics industry like Samsung extends the Flash brand to consumers and leverages our Flash developer base of over one million developers to create a substantially differentiated Samsung product offering."

"Macromedia Flash brings a refined, effective user experience to our set top box platform," said Mr. Kim Young-Joon, senior marketing manager, Samsung Electronics. "By ensuring our customers can experience all of their favourite sites and applications with the same richness as their desktop computer, the Flash Player SDK also gives us the control to extend the set top platform user experience using Flash."

The SMT-7000 Series is a hybrid and advanced IP set top box platform that delivers a powerful solution for communication service providers. The Flash Player SDK, integrated into set top boxes, enables dynamic and rich user interfaces. The Flash Player also delivers a diverse range of content to television sets including rich Internet applications, games and interactive program guides. More than one million developers can create this content using Flash MX Professional 2004. In addition, more than 75 electronics manufacturers, mobile carriers and service providers use Flash to differentiate their products and services.

Experience matters. Macromedia is motivated by the belief that great experiences build great businesses. Our software empowers millions of business users, developers and designers to create and deliver effective, compelling and memorable experiences - on the Internet, on fixed media, on wireless and on digital devices.
