Symantec Security Upgrades W32.Netsky To Level 4

Symantec Security Response is continuing to track W32.Netsky.D@mm and has upgraded the threat to level 4, on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the most serious.

The threat is being upgraded due to an increase in the level of submissions received from customers. W32.Netsky.D@mm is a mass-mailing worm that is a variant of W32.Netsky.C@mm . The worm scans drives C through Z for email addresses and sends itself to addresses that are found.

The Subject, Body, and Attachment names vary. The attachment will have a .pif file extension. To date, Symantec has received 1433 submissions worldwide of W32.Netsky.D@mm. Over 50 percent of all submissions originate in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region.

At this time, the Americas are reporting 59 submissions. However because this worm targets the consumer user, Symantec expects an increase in submissions when consumers return home from work in the Americas.

Symantec encourages all users to update their virus definitions on a regular basis and not to open any e-mails from unknown sources.
