Server Accelerates Performance

New NCR Server Accelerates Teradata Data Warehouse Performance

First server to scale to 4.2 petabytes in size for commercial decision support

AUCKLAND, New Zealand – Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation, announced the shipment of the sleek NCR 5400 Server that accelerates the Teradata Warehouse performance by 20 percent with the capability to handle increased data volume. The Teradata enterprise data warehouse solution, supported by the NCR 5400 Server performance boost and the Teradata database, enables Teradata customers to make better, faster business decisions.

“The NCR 5400 Server is the first server capable of scaling to 4.2 petabytes* in size for commercial decision support. It has been designed to grow as a customer’s business grows, from a single server to hundreds of servers, without rewriting the applications, database or the tools and utilities,” said Julian Beavis, vice president, Teradata Australia and New Zealand. “More important than size, the new server’s performance supports businesses that depend on their data warehouse for mission-critical applications that drive revenue, customer satisfaction and employee productivity.”

In addition to performance, the NCR 5400 Server cabinet has up to a 40 percent smaller footprint, which optimizes the use of data center floor. The cabinet’s efficient design can now support up to 10 nodes or processing units, an improvement over the 4 nodes accommodated by the previous cabinet. The patent-pending design revolutionizes the manner in which the coldest room air is channeled through the cabinet effectively cooling the nodes and providing a
30 percent boost in storage reliability.

The NCR 5400 Server supports current 32-bit and future 64-bit solutions leveraging the Dual Intel Xeon EM64T 3.6 GHz processor technology with hyper-threading. This hyper-threading design allows a single processor to manage data as if it were two processors by handling data instructions in parallel rather than one at a time, increasing system performance and throughput.

The NCR 5400 Server has been configured to coexist with five previous generations of NCR servers providing customers with protection for investments made in prior technology. Instead of replacing older generations of servers when the data warehouse expands, businesses can incrementally grow their data warehouse with a new NCR server while using previous models and maximizing their investments.

* note: A petabyte is defined as one thousand terabytes of data. For example, if every personal computer had a 50 gigabyte hard drive, storing a petabyte would take 20,000 personal computers.
