Attention: Political and Environmental Reporters

Auckland public take action against climate change as part of global day of action

The global day of action against climate change, ŒClimaction,' is taking place on November the 4th Aotea Square in Auckland City. Auckland can expect to see giant public discussion occurring in the centre of New Zealands' largest city, about the climate change issue. The action day symbolises global solidarity and agreement that climate change is the biggest issue facing humanity and one that needs immediate and effective action.

Climaction is a global day of action that is occurring all around the world in many different city centres on November the 4th. They are being organised to coincide with the United Nations to coincide with the United Nations Climate Conference in Nairobi, November 6th to 17th 2006.

These demonstrations demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action we need to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate, so that the entire world community can move as rapidly as possible to a stronger emissions reductions treaty that is equitable as well as effective in preventing dangerous climate change.

Auckland's Climaction' is being organised by a coalition of a large number of environmental, community, social and political organisations in the Auckland area, all with different aims coming together to organise around this global day.

The day is all about the public getting involved in this issue and the group aim for those who come along to learn more about climate change- inspiring people into action. The group also
intend for the day to be about promoting two specific aims: the necessity for free and frequent public transport, and secondly, that the Kyoto Protocol is not enough to stop climate change and associated global warming.

Climate change is a serious issue that needs to be tackled at multiple levels. There needs to be much more integration of climate change as an issue into all levels of political decision making as well as personal decision making. An inconvenient truth' has started the debate- but its about encouraging more people to understand the magnitude of the issue and to take action.' Said a Climaction organizer.

The day will have speakers from politicians to scientists to concerned citizens as well as representatives from different environmental groups from around Auckland. The public are encouraged to come down and show their solidarity to show that we are serious about this issue.

This action signifies the first event of a series of events as part of the worldwide ŒClimaction' movement and are planning many future events and actions on the climate change issue. The group aim for this to be a catalyst for wider social learning about the issues.
