PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Software Overview

PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Software Overview

AUCKLAND, 23rd February 2007 - Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand (SCE NZ) today confirmed the line-up of launch games for the PLAYSTATION®3 console. In a first for SCE NZ, a selection of downloadable games are being announced alongside the traditional disc based products. In total there are 30 games scheduled for launch alongside the console on 23 March 2007.

PLAYSTATION 3 Disc Based Games (Blu-ray Disc)

All disc based games for PLAYSTATION 3 will be delivered on the new high capacity disc format, Blu-ray™ Disc. Each Blu-ray disc can store up to 25GB (single layer) and 50GB (dual layer) of data – the equivalent of 77 CDs or five single layer DVDs of information on a single disc. Blu-ray disc enables PLAYSTATION 3 games to include high definition graphics, more game play and richer sound. The combination of Blu-ray disc media and the Cell Broadband Engine™ (processor) provides developers with the data capacity and power to push game play to new levels.

Some of the highly anticipated and exclusive PLAYSTATION 3 launch titles include Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™, Genji™: Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE™ CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer™ 7.

PLAYSTATION 3 Downloadable Games (PLAYSTATION®Network Games)

In addition to disc based games there is a range of downloadable games that will be made available from the PLAYSTATION®Store. The store is an online environment located within the PLAYSTATION®3 interface that will offer games, game demos, game expansions and movie trailers.

In contrast to the Blu-ray disc products, PLAYSTATION Network Games will be vastly smaller, providing ‘snack’ sized gaming alternatives. After selecting and paying for your game of choice it gets downloaded to and then played from the hard disk drive of the PLAYSTATION 3.

Games available for download at launch of the console will include flOw™, Blast Factor™, Tekken®: Dark Resurrection, Go Puzzle and Go Sudoku. Further, Gran Turismo® HD Concept will be available for download at launch for no charge. Gran Turismo HD Concept is a sample product designed to allow gamers to experience the Full HD graphic capabilities of the PS3 hardware.

The New Zealand launch of the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system will be supported by an exceptional range of disc and downloadable titles across every genre. In addition to games from SCE NZ there will be a host of games from the world’s leading third party publishers including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal and Sony Online Entertainment.

PLAYSTATION 3 Software Highlights (Blu-ray Disc)

Highlights of the games available at launch both on disc and through download from the PLAYSTATION Network include:

A gripping first-person action game developed exclusively for the PLAYSTATION®3. Set in a frightening, alternate 20th century reality, Resistance: Fall of Man™ capitalises on the superior processing power of the PLAYSTATION 3 to deliver a unique blend of harrowing military action and unnerving horror. A great first person shooter with plenty of on and offline action.

MotorStorm™ is a brutal, no-holds-barred off-road racing game created exclusively for the PLAYSTATION®3. Set in the desert environment of Monument Valley, MotorStorm takes full advantage of the processing power of the PLAYSTATION 3 to deliver an extreme racing event where the goal is not to only win, but to survive. A new class of game has been delivered in the universally favoured ‘driving’ genre.

Genji™: Days of the Blade continues the story of Japanese hero Yoshitsune, the man destined to flee to Mongolia and become Genghis Khan. Drawing on both the history of Japan and its most enduring legend, Genji: Days of the Blade portrays real events including Yoshitsune’s success in driving the enemy back to their boat at Ichinotani and the great naval battle of Dannoura in 1185. A beautifully created action and adventure game.

Continuing its illustrious history, Ridge Racer™ comes to PLAYSTATION®3. Drift around corners at speeds over 160mph, modify your vehicle using as many as 375,000 visual customizations and 7,150 tuning option, but most importantly, take the lead as Ridge Racer™ 7 brings gamers an exhilarating driving and online gaming experience unlike any other.

FORMULA ONE™ CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION is scheduled to roar onto the PLAYSTATION®3 with all the official drivers, cars, circuits, rules and teams. With high definition graphics and visual affects that emulate your acceleration and braking, you’ll never be as close to the cockpit of a Formula One car.

PLAYSTATION 3 Software Highlights (PLAYSTATION Network Games)

The world’s greatest fighting game is back…with new characters, new stages, new features and new moves! Russian soldier Sergei Dragunov and Lili, the only daughter of a wealthy oil magnate, join the colorful cast of bone-crunching, kick-ass characters ready to fight and be crowned King of Iron Fist. A fighting game classic.

Blast FactorTM is an action game which takes players into a fierce microbiological arena to guide a nano-machine against viral swarms. Proceed from specimen to specimen, waging microscopic war against an array of deadly viruses. Tilt the SIXAXISTM controller to send ripples through the arena that shove enemies into groups, and then blast ‘em into catastrophic chain explosions for big points! High adrenaline arcade action in full HD at 1080P.

Using the SIXAXIS motion control, you manipulate a square wading pool, tilting up, down, left and right to maneuver your mother duck around the stage. She needs to collect the numerous ducklings around the pool, avoiding obstacles and deadly traps. When the mother duck passes a duckling, it follows behind, soon creating a trail of tiny quackers. All of these little ones need to be dropped off at the exit point. While it sounds simple, the trail of ducklings is susceptible to the environment, so the bigger the duck train, the more difficult it becomes to avoid pitfalls and obstructions. Good clean fun!
