NZ Firm Secures Us Patent For Web Browser Tech
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 2009
NZ FIRM SECURES US PATENT FOR WEB
BROWSER TECHNOLOGY
The US Patent Office has awarded New Zealand firm Aspiring Software Limited a US Patent # 7480694 for browser software incorporated in the pageQ browser @ www.pageQ.com. USPTO link >
pageQ® Browser allows web surfers to create, annotate and modify a playlist of web pages. The playlists (or Q®s) can be shared via email or posted on a web site. pageQ consists of a browser window, a web page playlist and a player toolbar. The toolbar contains media player controls (play, pause, next, previous, ff, rewind) and a ‘camera icon’ to capture pages to the playlist. The components are familiar so it’s intuitive to use.
pageQ designer, John Blennerhassett comments: “The application is a cool web tool that lets you play a slideshow of selected web pages. Like iTunes, but for web pages. The Qs that pageQ users create are ‘nuggets of web research’ or put another way ‘best of the web’ by an author who has researched their subject. The ease of sharing Qs, revisiting and improving existing Qs and the potential of creating a community of Q users is most exciting. A shared repository of Qs with a ‘Q Search Engine’ that returns ‘best of’ playlists of web pages in a Q has got to be better than the static, web-bot generated results from contemporary search engines.”
Aspiring Software Limited director Alistair Munro has guided the patent exercise to fruition. “Gaining a US patent has been part of our strategy since day one. At present we provide a free shareware tool for web browsers. We want to partner with an internet company that has the reach and reputation to create a ‘Q community’ that will share Qs. The obvious candidates are search engine providers, browsers and web community sites. Having patented intellectual property certainly mitigates risk for the innovator and creator of a shared Q repository.”
Kate Russell from the BBC Click Online program has this to say about pageQ - “www.pageq.com is the home of an application that allows you to create a slideshow of selected web pages, which can then be saved for future reference, or emailed to a friend to share. I've checked this download out, and cannot find fault with it - all it contains is a really cool program. It could prove to be the new way to submit your suggestions to Webscape.”
