Saving the planet one printer at a time

Saving the planet one printer at a time

Canon New Zealand in partnership with JB HiFi are trialing a new initiative to encourage consumers to recycle obsolete printers.

During March anyone purchasing a Canon PIXMA inkjet printer at a JB HiFi store is encouraged to bring in their old inkjet or laser printer regardless of the make, model or condition.

All recycled printers will be delivered to Auckland based company Computer Recycling Ltd where they are broken down and recycled. Not only can consumers be confident that they are helping the environment by reducing waste but they will also receive a 20 per cent discount off the purchase price of their new Canon printer.

Robert de Jeu, Brand Manager – Print Solutions, Canon New Zealand says the initiative was put together to provide consumers with a hassle free avenue for recycling old printers and further strengthen Canon’s commitment to the environment.

“This is the first time we have offered a recycling program like this, which builds on our philosophy of product life cycle management. We are constantly investigating new ways to reduce environmental impact from production through to end-of-life with our products.

Many people have obsolete printers they wish to replace or upgrade and would simply throw them into the rubbish. This initiative will stop that waste from ending up in landfills,” says de Jeu.

Computer Recycling Ltd separates the printers into all the relevant commodity streams including plastic, steel, copper and electronics to such a degree that almost 100 per cent of the product is salvaged and recycled.

Canon has a number of recycling programs currently in place including an ink and toner cartridge collection and recycling service. In 2009 Canon launched a range of ‘Green’ calculators which are manufactured using recycled materials from Canon photocopiers.
