Living Cell Technologies Limited a global
company pioneering the development of a cell implant to
treat diabetes, has obtained approval to commence a Phase II
DIABECELL clinical trial in Buenos Aires, Argentina,
DIABECELL's third jurisdiction to date which has approved

Caldera Health is
the startup launched by two of New Zealand’s best-known
scientist entrepreneurs. Drs Jim Watson and Richard Forster
launched Caldera Health after both were misdiagnosed after
undergoing prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood tests, the
usual method for detecting prostate cancer, which kills

Scion and Rotorua
District Council joined forces in 2008 to develop a new
approach to the management of organic waste. The city's
waste water treatment plant took delivery of its Waste to
Gold pilot plant, that if successful, will turn human waste
into useful chemicals and nutrients. If successful, a
full-scale plant could remove up to 8500 tonnes of bio-solid
waste going to landfill and in terms of cost reductions and
value creation could benefit the Rotorua community by up to

Firms in the expanding
medical technology sector plan to hire 165 skilled staff
over the next two years, and 22 companies are looking to
raise $44.1 million during the same period, a survey
conducted bt the Medical Technology Association of New

New Zealand’s Clinical
Trial Capabilities to be Showcased
New Zealand’s
capabilities and expertise at testing new medical practices
and products will be internationally showcased during the
Rugby World Cup.
NZBIO along with other industry associations such as Medicines New Zealand and Medical Technology Association of New Zealand is running a Clinical Trial Showcase in Auckland on September 21, 2011.

MSI Funding Opportunity -
Postgraduate Internships
Applications are open for
the 2011 Postgraduate Internship programme until 12pm 31 May
2011.
The Ministry of Science and Innovation (MSI) will
fund 50 businesses to employ a science, technology or
engineering postgraduate intern for six
months.
Successful businesses will receive up to $30,000
+ GST towards per person towards a postgraduate intern’s
salary.
The programme is open to businesses of all sizes
that have a focus on research and development.

Medicines New Zealand Value of Medicines Award Now Open
Through the Value of Medicines Award Medicines New
Zealand recognises one New Zealand researcher or health care
professional for their outstanding contribution to improving
the understanding, effectiveness or safety of the use of
medicines in New Zealand. The Award will take the form of a
single payment of $20,000 to the chosen individual.
