Learn how Apparel by Design use Unleashed for their inventory management
As is the case with most of the businesses we’ve spoken to, there is an interesting story for how Apparel by Design came about. Rik Dalton, Apparel by Design’s founder and owner, was racing in a professional cycling event, when he was involved in an accident which meant he was unable to continue in his boatbuilding career. Being an entrepreneurial sort though, he found a new venture to channel his passion into, and after successfully establishing American clothing brand Russell Athletic in the New Zealand market, decided to start his own company, Apparel by Design.
Apparel by Design specialize in designing and producing customised clothing and promotional goods for a wide range of customers. Working with carefully selected factories in China to produce the goods, they are then shipped to Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. Apparel by Design operate a lean team in New Zealand, made up of Rik (Managing Director), their production planner, designer and financial accountant (above), with a sales team based in Melbourne, and casual staff called in for events as required.
One thing that is unique about Apparel by Design’s business is they have a particular focus on the motorsport industry, and they can often be found selling merchandise at motorsport events around New Zealand and Australia.
While motorsport is Rik’s passion, Apparel by Design’s expertise means they often work with large corporates to design uniforms or custom apparel and merchandise, and to customize event products, including caps, bags, towels, pens, lanyards, polo’s, and jackets.
Sarah Curtis, Apparel by Design’s financial accountant and main Unleashed user, is a cloud convert. She raves about being able to use Unleashed from anywhere, at any time, and says this has been particularly helpful for the events they sell merchandise at. As Unleashed can be used anywhere a computer or mobile device can be connected to the internet, Sarah uses it from the office, while the Melbourne team use it from the warehouse floor.
They have two Unleashed accounts, one for their Australian company and one for their New Zealand company, which allows them to easily track how each one is performing. When it comes to transferring stock between companies this is easily completed by selling stock from one company to another.
Apparel by Design has also taken advantage of Unleashed’s multi-warehouse functionality to set up a transfer warehouse which they use for transferring stock out of their main warehouses in preparation for sale at events.
When selling merchandise at events the team use Vend for their point-of-sale solution, which integrates with their event warehouse, and means they don’t have to re-enter all their sales into Unleashed when the event has finished. Apart from arranging for the merchandise to be returned to their Melbourne warehouse, all they need to do is run a stocktake to check their inventory is accounted for and that sales records in Unleashed and Vend match.
With quality and efficiency as their two highest priorities, it’s no surprise that Apparel by Design selected Unleashed for their inventory management solution.
