WEKA to Be Released in Kaimai Forest Tomorrow
WEKA to Be Released in Kaimai Forest Tomorrow
About 40 North Island weka will be released into a special bird avery built in Aongatete Forest tomorrow (Thursday).
Weka is one of New Zealand's iconic large flightless birds. They have become extinct over large tracts of the mainland and are susceptible to predation by rats, stoats, dogs and ferrets.
The translocation of the weka is the culmination of six years of pest control by "Bring back the birds Aongatete", an umbrella group for Forest & Bird, Aongatete Forest Restoration Trust and Katikati Rotary.
Together they control possums, rats and stoats over a 500 hectare block in the Kaimai Forest.
The birds will be released as the next stage in re-establishing biodiversity in the Kaimai Forest. Weka were chosen for their charismatic and outgoing personality and their love of people, making the birds ideal ambassadors for the restoration project.
