Aviation roadshows – landing at a location near you

Big changes are happening in New Zealand’s airspace and the team leading the changes will visit a range of locations around the country later this month to let people know about the changes.

Steve Smyth, Director of the New Southern Sky programme, says new satellite navigation and surveillance systems will make air travel smarter, quicker and safer. These changes require new systems to be installed on the ground and in aircraft.

New Southern Sky is a 10-year programme to modernise New Zealand’s aviation system, led by the Civil Aviation Authority in partnership with Airways New Zealand and the Ministry of Transport.

“New performance-based navigation and satellite surveillance systems will mean more direct flights, reducing airline flying time and fuel usage, resulting in fewer carbon emissions.

“Over 20 years, these changes are expected to boost New Zealand’s economy by about $2 billion through fuel savings, lower aircraft operating costs and passenger value of time.

“If you fly in, or plan to fly in, controlled airspace these changes will interest you. The roadshows are a really useful opportunity for people to find out more about the benefits of the changes, what’s involved, and how they’ll be affected, whether they work in a pilot training organisation, are involved in air rescue work, they’re helicopter operators or people who fly for leisure.

“These sessions will also be valuable for aviation engineering companies that are likely to be supporting aircraft updates to enable the introduction of the technology changes.
