Kaikōura International Dark Sky Sanctuary Celebrates First Anniversary

On the 12th September 2024, Kaikōura was officially recognised as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary — the 22nd in the world and the third in New Zealand. This first anniversary marks a significant milestone, reflecting both the progress made in protecting Kaikōura’s night skies and our community embracing new astro-tourism opportunities.

Over the past year, Kaikōura has seen:

• Outdoor lighting provisions fully adopted across the district, ensuring all new lighting meets dark sky friendly standards.

• A community lighting outreach project gaining momentum, including the collaborative design and construction of a mobile outdoor lighting display unit.

• Creation of the Young Astronomers Programme by the Moana Skies team for all our local tamariki

• A growing number of astro-tourism opportunities for locals and visitors to enjoy.

• Community stargazing evenings drawing growing numbers of all ages. Brian Horsfall, local astronomer and long-time volunteer said “For years I’ve shared my telescope with anyone curious to look through it. To see how interest is blossoming is deeply rewarding.”

Community Celebration:

To mark this milestone, the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust warmly invites the community to a special anniversary stargazing evening supported by Moana Skies.

Friday 12th September 2025

Fyffe House Grounds, 62 Avoca Street

7:00 – 9:00 PM

Telescopes, VR headsets, and firepits will be on hand; marshmallows will be roasted, and stories of the stars will be shared. Entry is free, with a koha encouraged for Fyffe House in recognition of their continued support.

Five years ago, I dreamed of Kaikōura’s night skies being protected for our fragile environment and the wildlife that depend on the natural darkness. Today, as we

celebrate one year as a Dark Sky Sanctuary, it’s inspiring to see that vision becoming reality through the strength of our community.

Looking Ahead:

We eagerly await the completion of NZTA’s State Highway 1 lighting retrofit by the end of October, a major step in reducing light pollution from the town itself which should have a positive environmental impact on our precious Hutton’s shearwaters.

With night sky interest growing, local accommodation providers and businesses are well placed to benefit, and supporters of the Dark Sky Trust can gain extra exposure through our website.

Launching soon is a six session Moana Skies Astronomy Programme in Kaikōura specifically for adults.

This November will also see the launch of the Kaikōura Calendar, showcasing stunning night sky images from across the district.

Lisa Bond, Chair of the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust:

“Our first year has been about laying foundations strengthening lighting standards, building community pride, and growing awareness. The years ahead are about building momentum, so Kaikōura’s skies can shine ever brighter.”
