Friday Arvo Surf Update

Friday Arvo Surf Update

It has been a busy week for waves around the country. Yes a lot of us have been surfing. The weekend is looking good as well, with swell on the West Coast and a rising east to southeast swell on the East Coast, from the far North to the South Island. Can Taranaki take home the log of wood?

- Weather Situation - Regional Report - What's Hot

WEATHER SITUATION:

There is a high in the Tasman Sea moving quite slowly towards us, bringing Easterlies with it. We have two little lows sitting off the East Coast of the North Island with a front wedged in between them. There is a low way out to the east of the South Island with a high next to it just off the coast. There is a low with a strong west to southwest airflow associated with it, that is lurking in the deep Southern Ocean under the South Island.

REGIONAL REPORT:

North Island

Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:

West Coast: No shortage of swell this afternoon on the West Coast with a lumpy, messy 3-4 feet and the bigger sets are 5 foot. Messy with a south to southwest wind. The good news is; southerlies tomorrow and southeast by Sunday. The swell will ease over the weekend. Raglan should be looking all right tomorrow. LT 1405. East Coast: We have an east to southeast swell again this weekend with a light southerly wind this afternoon. There is 1-2 feet in the Bay, with the swell angle getting into the Coro better. The Auckland's northern East Coast has a smaller 2-2.5 feet, but we expect more over the weekend with swell peaking late tomorrow arvo on the incoming tide. The winds will be southwest today tending southerly and the southeast filling in by late Saturday or Sunday. HT 1500.

Gisborne; Wairarapa: East-southeast swell developing and strong southeast to east winds tomorrow with a northeast wind developing in the south of the region by Sunday. This afternoon we have a messy east/southeast swell of 2-3 feet that is rising. We are expecting more swell over the weekend and the winds will continue to be onshore in the north of the region. You will just have to go hunting. HT 1845. Camera Link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/41262C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/

Taranaki:

Fitzroy has waves and there is a fair crew out there getting amongst it. The wind is from the south and we have a southwest swell of 2-3 feet. It is looking like waves all weekend with a slowly easing swell from the southwest and offshore southerlies continuing right through the weekend. Down the coast is a good 3-5 feet this afternoon. LT 1645. Camera link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/41263C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/

Wellington:

West Coast; Flatness continues and it is not looking like improving for the weekend. Southerlies tomorrow. HT 1450.

South Coast; Southerly winds this afternoon that will continue into the weekend with strong southerlies easing tomorrow. Northeast winds by Sunday. South swell slowly rising, but don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed. I'm expecting 3-4 feet at the most. HT 1830. Camera link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/41264C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/

South Island

West Coast:

West to southwest swell of 3-4 feet tending southwest and rising. Southwest winds tomorrow easing and a northeast wind to develop for the rest of the weekend. LT 1155. Camera link: http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/41265C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/

Kaikoura; Canterbury:

We have two feet this afternoon with a southerly wind on it - Not too bad. We are expecting more swell over the weekend from the east. The wind is forecast to be from the southwest tomorrow with light winds by Sunday. HT 1620.

Christchurch: We have 1-2 feet this afternoon at Taylors of east swell. The swell should pick up tomorrow but don't expect a lot. The wind is a lightish westerly, which will swing more to the southwest and then south this afternoon. Lighter southwest tomorrow with northeast by Sunday.

Dunedin; Southland:

The wind is from the south now and will continue to swing right around to the east northeast tomorrow, with north to northwest by Sunday. This arvo there is 1-3 feet of messy surf with a light onshore. More swell should develop from the southeast tomorrow with an east-northeast swell arriving by Sunday. HT 1625.
