Partners push sporting Kiwis’ Olympic dream

Meridian Energy and the New Zealand Olympics Committee today entered into a partnership to help power the next generation of Olympians.

The energy company and the sports organization have joined forces to ask sporting New Zealanders to ‘Switch for your Sport’. The New Zealand Olympics Committee (NZOC) will be tapping into their sports communities and giving people the option to raise funds for a sporting code of their choice in exchange for joining up with Meridian as their energy provider.

“It’s a really different kind of partnership and a good business model that allows Meridian to connect with customers at a community level and also support them in nurturing the young sporting talent of our country,” said Meridian Chief Executive Tim Lusk.

“New Zealanders love sport and together we share the excitement of an athlete doing well on the international stage. As a nation we can’t help but get fired up to support young talent. This is another way we as a business can extend our customer base and support some of the real hard working sporting fraternities across the country,” added Mr Lusk.

“The New Zealand Olympic Committee is excited about the benefits this partnership will bring to the sporting community. We’re committed to looking after the next generation of sporting greats, so working with an energy company that only generates its electricity from renewable resources means we share a philosophy and both have our sights on a better future for New Zealand,” said Barry Maister, Secretary General of the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

For each customer Meridian will donate $15 per annum to their chosen affiliated sport. If someone is already a Meridian customer they can chose an affiliated sport and Meridian will still donate $15 per annum to the sport.

The ‘Switch for your Sport’ campaign is entirely through e-channel with all emails being distributed by the sports committee.
