Ride Sharing Makes Getting Up The Mountain Easy
Ride Sharing Makes Getting Up The Mountain Easy
Snowboarder Patrick Davey was tired of seeing single-car drivers pull into ski field car parks, while students and people without four-wheel-drive vehicles struggled to find an affordable way up the mountain.
So in 2006, Patrick created Snowpool.org.nz, a simple website that helped drivers and passengers find each other.
For four years, Snowpool has been helping skiers reduce their fuel costs and their carbon footprint, meet new people and get up the mountain more often.
“Snowpool’s mission is to reduce the cost of getting up the hill, reduce the environmental impact of commuting to the snow, to enable greater access to more people and to foster greater community links,” Patrick says. “In this day and age it really should be our duty to help minimise our impact on the environment.”
Snowpool.org.nz services every ski field in New Zealand and is about to launch into the United States and Canada.
The site is sponsored by Kingswood Skis. “As soon as we saw Snowpool, we knew it was a great idea. Patrick had put all his own money and time into it and we wanted to help him out so that the concept could survive,” says Kris Herbert of Kingswood Skis.
More and more skiers are logging onto Snowpool.org.nz. Ski fields can link daily rides from their website and this year, Patrick plans to introduce a blog and ski-related listing to the site.
