Castrol Honda Takes Podiums at Paeroa
New Plymouth’s Hayden Fitzgerald took his Castrol Honda CBR1000RR in its NEW livery to three podium finishes at the twentieth running of the annual “Battle of the Streets”, in the small Hauraki Plains township of Paeroa last Sunday (Feb 20)
His major competition came from Australian Daniel Stauffer and Whakatane veteran street fighter Tony Rees both on Yamahas, along with Hamilton’s Sloan Frost on his BMW.
Fitzgerald rode consistently all day. He got a reasonable start in race one of the Formula Paeroa class and stayed close to the leaders, passing Rees two laps from home to take third.
In race two, Fitzgerald got an excellent start and lead for eight of the ten laps before Stauffer managed to move into the lead relegating him to second.
The “King of the Streets” was very similar, Fitzgerald lead for two laps and then settled into a battle with Frost which resulted in a close finish, with the BMW’s quick-shifter making the difference leaving Fitzgerald with a second third.
Fitzgerald was ably supported by Dealer Team rider, Christchurch’s Ryan Hampton on his Hampton Honda CBR1000R8, picking up two fifths in the Formula Paeroa races and a fourth in the “King of the Streets” after Tony Rees fell.
