Rugby Fever Hits the Cooks

The Cook Islands are preparing for their own bout of rugby fever when the Sevens in Heaven tournament takes place 3rd - 5th November in Rarotonga.

For eager footie fans the chance to eke out the excitement of the World Cup as well as taking the opportunity to snatch a few days to bask in a tropical paradise will be a double bonus when the tournament begins this month.

Interest in the International 7s in the Cooks increased to an all time high in 2010 with a play off of 16 men's teams and 9 women's. This year will see the same number vie for the coveted title including champions from New Zealand College Rifles. They achieved a first in 2010 when they won both the Men's and Women's divisions. This year promises a closely fought battle as local teams compete with a strong influx of Kiwis.

The line-up is a mix of the old faithfuls, some newbies and the return of teams from the past. A good balance of locals and sister-islands will put up a strong challenge to the New Zealand contenders like defending champions College Rifles, Te Ara Wheke, the NZ Maori team and Wellington's Porirua Magic in the men's division.

In the women's division the New Zealand teams are defending champions College Rifles, Hastings Rugby and Sports along with the Ponsonby women's team Rebels.
