(Hamilton: NZ) Former New Zealand cricket captain Ken Rutherford has been appointed as General Manager of the Waikato Racing Club (WRC), WRC Chairman David Smith confirmed today.

“The Board of the WRC is delighted to have Ken joining our team.  This is a pivotal role as, between our two venues of Te Rapa and Paeroa, the Club now stages more race meetings in New Zealand than any other racing club. Racing is a significant contributor to the Waikato economy.

“The WRC is one of the oldest and most respected clubs in New Zealand and is widely regarded as having the best racing surface in the country.  This is due to visionary leadership and a determination to make the WRC the most successful of its kind.  Ken Rutherford’s appointment certainly underlines that determination.”

Mr Smith continued:

“Obviously Ken needs no introduction – a former New Zealand cricket captain, he has worked in broadcasting and bookmaking roles in New Zealand, Singapore and now South Africa.  He brings vast experience and commercial knowledge to the General Manager’s position.  So together with his energy and passion for racing, it’s a perfect fit! 

“I know that everyone in the Waikato will be thrilled to hear this news – from our sponsors to our race goers, we are looking forward to exciting times ahead.”
 
Ken Rutherford said today:
 
“I am incredibly proud and elated at my appointment as General Manager of the Waikato Racing Club.  The Club is an integral part of the Waikato community and has established itself as a key component of the racing industry in New Zealand.  I look forward to contributing to the growth and success of the Club going forward.”
 
The retirement of present General Manager Tony Enting after 35 years saw huge interest from candidates from within and outside the racing industry.

“We were overwhelmed at the level of interest, which included a large number of well-credentialed overseas applicants. That tells us a lot about the high regard in which the WRC is held as well as the opportunities that lie ahead of us.”

Mr Rutherford will be returning to New Zealand from South Africa with his wife Gail and two daughters, with his appointment effective from 1 August 2013, the start of the new racing season.
