SUBJECT: AUSTRIA FAVORS RESOLUTION CONDEMNING RAPE AS
INSTRUMENT OF STATE POLICY
REF: STATE 135255
On October 4, EconPoloff delivered reftel demarche to
Elisabeth Riederer, MFA Director for International Gender
Issues, requesting GoA support regarding the U.S.-sponsored
UN resolution on Condemning the Use of Rape as an Instrument
of State Policy. Riederer noted a general positive attitude
from the GoA and EU towards the resolution. The GoA will
only offer full support after reviewimg the draft resolution,
and shares the USG concern about the possible insertion of
amendments which could prevent the USG from sponsoring or
supporting the resolution, she said. Riederer promised to
inform Embassy of any updates or decisions concerning the
GoA's position on the issue.
