NATO on the stampede deaths in Iraq
Statement by the Secretary General on the stampede deaths in Iraq
I am profoundly saddened by the enormous loss of life today in Baghdad. This tragedy was the direct result of terrorism; hundreds of innocent people, mostly women and children, have died because of the fear and panic that terrorists are sowing in Iraq.
I express my deep condolences to the Iraqi people. NATO, through its expanding training mission, will continue to support the Iraqi Government as it builds the security forces it needs to resist terrorism, and to maintain peace and security in this new democracy.
