Prime Minister Sogavare Assures Nation Of Healthy Partnership With Ramsi

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has assured the nation that the government will not undermine the security of Solomon Islanders in its dealings with the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).

Addressing the nation on its 29th National Independence Anniversary Celebration at Aligegeo, Malaita province on Friday, Mr Sogavare said recent odd events emerging between the Government and RAMSI were crucial for realizing how to further strengthen the partnership between the two parties.

He said his government and the people of Solomon Islands appreciate RAMSI’s contribution towards earning the peace and stability currently enjoyed by all Solomon Islanders after five years of civil unrest.

“RAMSI deserves our unreserved commendation for ensuring that the country enjoys peace and stability to allow the government to implement its policies.

Mr Sogavare admitted that at times both parties were at odds on important national issues but that is crucial for improving their partnership.

“The government takes that as a sign of healthy relationship premised on the principles of partnership.

“I would like to assure the people of this country that the government would do nothing that will undermine the safety and security of our people in its dealings with RAMSI,” Mr Sogavare said.

Over 30 thousand people turned up at Aligegeo Stadium to join the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Nathaniel Waena, Prime Minister Sogavare, Diplomats and government officials to mark the anniversary on Friday.

Solomon Islands gained political Independence from Britain on July 7, 1978 and continue to adopt the West Minister system of government.

Under the system, Queen Elizabeth II remains the head of state where she was physically represent by the Governor General while the Prime Minister is the head of the government.
