Government Receives 4 Million Kina From PNG

The Solomon Islands Government has officially received a grant assistance of four million kina (SBD$11.38 million) from the Government of Papua New Guinea.

The grant assistance is part of the development assistance program of the Papua New Guinea Government to Solomon Islands.

The assistance was officially handed over to the Solomon Islands High commissioner to Papua New Guinea Mr. Bernard Bata'anisia by Papua New Guinea Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration Hon. Sam Abal at a ceremony at Parliament House in Port Moresby this afternoon.

The Official handover was witnessed by the Papua New Guinea Government Ministers and senior Government Officials and media representatives.

The grant assistance was part of Papua New Guinea Government's commitment to assist Solomon Islands in its development needs and aspirations, and to support training of Solomon Islands students studying in various tertiary institutions in Papua New Guinea in 2007 and 2008.

During handing over, the Papua New Guinea's Foreign Affairs Minister Hon Sam Abal stated that his Government was honored to assist Solomon Islands with its development needs and manpower training.

Particularly in terms of supporting Solomon Islands students in their academic and also their living cost.

The Grant Assistance was initiated by the Papua New Guinea Government in 1997 to support Solomon Islands.

In 2006 a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed by the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands where by Papua New Guinea would assist Solomon Islands Government with the provision of scholarship and training of its students in various Papua New Guinea Tertiary Institutions.

And also for the construction of the new Solomon Islands High Commission Chancery Office in Port Moresby.

"Therefore the current Somare Government was pleased to honour this long standing commitment with the provision of this assistance" said Minister Abal.

In response, Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, HE Mr. Bernard Bata'anisia expressed Solomon Islands Government sincere thanks and appreciation to the Government of Papua New Guinea for the funding assistance.

He added the funding assistance would foster the continued relationship and enhanced the students aim in completing their training at the various tertiary institutions in Papua New Guinea.
