Ban Ki-Moon At No. 10 For Talks With Gordon Brown

Ban Ki-moon in No10 for talks

World fuel and food price rises were on the agenda earlier when United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon held talks with Gordon Brown at No10.

The PM thanked the Secretary General for the leadership he shows on the many challenges facing the international community.

Mr Brown said that the international community must "redouble its efforts" at a time when fuel prices were rising. The UN hosted summit in New York in September on achieving the millennium development goals must help the world's poorest citizens, he added.

The three-fold increase in oil was "severely affecting millions", the PM said. He called for "better dialogue" between fuel producers and consumers, and looked ahead to "global discussions" the summit in Jeddah later this month.

They discussed a number of issues on the Security Council's agenda including Burma, where the PM thanked Mr Ban for his continued humanitarian engagement.

Turning to the situation in Zimbabwe, both leaders called for restrictions on humanitarian assistance to be lifted, and for measures to ensure the freedom of forthcoming election to be put in place.
