UPDATE: 9 U.S. SOLDIERS KILLED IN KUNAR FIREFIGHT
Heavy fighting erupts in Kunar province
Kabul, Afghanistan - Afghan National Army and ISAF soldiers based in a Combat Outpost (COP) in Dara-I-Pech district, Kunar province, are involved in heavy fighting with insurgents that began at about 4:30 a.m., 13 July.
Insurgents have been firing at the COP with small arms, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars using homes, shops and the mosque in the village of Wanat for cover.
The combined ISAF and ANA force responded with small arms, machine guns, mortars, artillery, close air support and helicopters.
There have been casualties on both sides of the fight, but accurate numbers could not be confirmed as the fighting is ongoing at the time of this release.
