Red Cross Aid Worker To Deploy To Sri Lankan Conflict Zone
As fighting between government troops and fighters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) continues in Sri Lanka, New Zealand Red Cross aid worker Glenys Cheechi is preparing to deploy close to the danger zone.
Glenys leaves for Sri Lanka on Saturday 16 May for a three month mission as part of the International Committee of the Red Cross’ (ICRC) operations in the conflict area, assisting civilians displaced by the fighting.
Glenys will be working as a hospital administrator setting up a field hospital to treat those who have been injured in the fighting and also care for people who have been displaced.
Final confirmation of Glenys’ mission and administration around the issuing of a visa is expected overnight.
Since early February, the ICRC has evacuated more than 13,000 people from the conflict area by boat to Trincomalee and Pulmoddai, which are in government-controlled areas.
Glenys is an experienced New Zealand Red Cross aid worker, she completed her first mission over 20 years ago and has worked in countries such as Pakistan, Ethiopia, Sudan and most recently Afghanistan. In 1986 Glenys received the Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest honour for nursing professionals.
