Medical Evacuation Of ADF Member From East Timor
Medical Evacuation Of ADF Member From East Timor
An Australian soldier suffered a serious injury in East Timor last night after the balcony on which he was standing collapsed.
The soldier was aero-medically evacuated from the Bacau District by an Australian S70 Black Hawk and a team of paramedics to the International Security Force Aspen Medical facility in Dili.
This afternoon the soldier was transported by a United Nations flight from Dili to Darwin for further testing with specialist imaging equipment not currently available in East Timor.
While the soldier is seriously ill, he is conscious and in a stable condition.
His Next of Kin has been notified.
Defence will continue to provide medical treatment to the soldier and will take all possible steps to ensure his recovery and comfort.
An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
The soldier is deployed to East Timor as part of Operation Tower, the Australian Defence Force contribution to the United Nations Mission in East Timor which comprises four ADF members.
The International Security Force maintains an ADF Aero-Medical Evacuation capacity in East Timor.
