More Sewing Machines Coming for Rural Fiji Women

SUVA, Fiji —The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced today that it will move ahead with phase two of its sewing machines for rural women project.

50 sewing machines were donated to the Fiji Government last year, which were distributed to rural women to support self-reliance and employment opportunities. A further 50 machines will be donated by the Church in the coming months. Women in 25 villages will be benefited by the donation.

Church leader Elder Taniela Wakolo said that the Church is able to make these kinds of donations due to the generosity of Latter-day Saints in Fiji and around the world.

Many members of the Church and others not of the Mormon faith donate to the Church’s Humanitarian fund. These donations enable the Church to identify humanitarian needs in Fiji and worldwide and then implement projects for the benefit of individuals, families and communities.

The Church partners with government agencies and other charitable organizations, including other churches, in many cases.

For projects such as sewing machines for rural women, Church representatives work closely with village and government leaders so local circumstances can be understood and community members’ wishes can be respected.

“We do this and projects like it because we are followers of Jesus Christ. Our faith leads us to improve our own lives and to look to do good in the world,” Elder Wakolo said.
