How Wealth Inequality Is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do about It
By
Chuck Collins
San Francisco, CA – The Occupy Movement that started in September of last year gave voice to growing unrest about inequality in America and the world. The rallying cry of the movement, “We are the 99 Percent,” is an expression of how greed has made the top 1 percent of people wealthier, while leaving the rest of the country behind. Now, the effort is gaining momentum as it transitions from occupations by activists to a full-fledged social movement for change.
In 99 to 1 (Berrett-Koehler; March 2012; $14.95), Chuck Collins pulls together detailed information about the 1 percent and the 99 percent in all realms of society, the causes and consequences of this deep inequality, and what can be done about it. This book provides answers to the growing population of everyday Americans who are paying closer attention to the 99 percent movement.
Who are the 99 percent? Who are the 1 percent? How extensive and systemic is inequality in different areas of society? How is inequality changing in our world? What can we do about it?
Chuck Collins knows inequality. He is one of the world’s top writers, speakers, researchers, and activists on the rise of inequality in our society and its harmful effects. In 99 to 1, he brings together ideas that have been developed through articles, reports, websites, and street activism to give voice to the thoughts and dreams of the movement.
Collins provides revealing and powerful information about inequality in all realms of today’s world, including individual wealth and power, corporate wealth and power, media control, and political influence.. He then describes the functioning of the “Wall Street Inequality Machine” and how inequality wrecks everything we care about. And he tells how people and groups are pushing back against inequality and taking action to reduce inequality and create a world that works for the many and not just the few.
