ADF Move to Next Phase of Flood Relief Efforts in NSW

ADF Move to Next Phase of Flood Relief Efforts in NSW

Today the Australian Defence Force (ADF) enters the clean up and recovery phase of the operation to assist the people of Wagga Wagga.

The Commander of the Task Force in Wagga Wagga, Colonel David Hay, said the scale of devastation faced by the people of Wagga Wagga as a result of these floods has been heartbreaking.

“But I am encouraged by the way in which the numerous organisations and agencies have pulled together to rescue and assist those who are suffering at this time”.

Colonel Hay expressed his appreciation for the personnel from all three services, who have provided support up to this point of the operation.

"In particular I commend the efforts of our sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen thus far.

“Some of the tasks conducted have included evacuating people from flood affected areas, filling and placing many sandbags, door knocking, and generally transporting SES and other emergency personnel around the affected areas,” Colonel Hay said.

“All flood assistance tasks are undertaken at the request of Emergency Management Australia on behalf of the New South Wales Government, and then allocated to military elements to carry out specific jobs,” Colonel Hay said.

“With the emergency passing in most of the affected areas, we can now begin to look at the next phase in helping the New South Wales Government at this challenging time.

Colonel Hay said there has been no time set for the conclusion of the military’s activities. “That decision that will be made in due course in consultation with state and local authorities”.

Defence will continue to operate closely with State Emergency Services to provide subject matter expertise, planning, and coordination of the ADF support.

As well as personnel, the ADF is providing transport and equipment in support of flood relief operations in the areas of Shepparton and Nathalia, Northern Victoria.

“Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen will keep working until the job is done.”
