NZ to Send Youth Delegation to Rio+20 Conference
New Zealand to Send Youth Delegation to Global
Sustainability Conference Rio+20
New
Zealand will send four youth ambassadors to the global
sustainability conference Rio+20, to be held in Rio De
Janeiro, Brazil in June.
The New Zealand youth
delegation will participate in the official youth conference
at Rio+20. At the conference they will contribute a
distinctly New Zealand perspective on key sustainability
issues such as climate change, including ideas and solutions
they have developed and implemented in their own schools and
communities.
The chairman of the Enviro Challenge
New Zealand Charitable Trust, Calum Revfem, says “Our goal
is to enable young New Zealanders to become world-class
sustainability leaders. The Rio+20 conference presents a
unique opportunity for our young people to participate,
contribute, learn and develop to lead sustainability
initiatives in their schools and
communities.”
The four youth ambassadors in the
New Zealand delegation to Rio+20 are:
Andre
Morrison, Rotorua
Erin Hickey, Whakatane
Ben Dowdle,
Auckland
Injy Johnstone, Dunedin
The
youth ambassadors were trained and selected through their
active involvement in the Enviro Challenge high school
sustainability programme and the Sir Peter Blake Youth
EnviroLeaders’ Forum, which is run in conjunction with the
Ministry for the Environment. The delegates are actively
engaged in a range of other local and national
sustainability programmes .
Each youth ambassador is
currently fundraising for their travel costs and they are
looking to sustainability-focussed businesses and
organisations for funding.
The New Zealand youth
delegation to Rio+20 is being coordinated by Enviro
Challenge New Zealand with support from the Sir Peter Blake
Trust.
The official Rio+20 youth conference takes
place in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on June 10-12.
