Violent Eviction Of Ejidos Of San Sebastián
Bachajón
Zapatista Radio report that yesterday, June 19, at 7am, the ejido of San Sebastián Bachajón, adherents of The Other Campaign, recovered the toll booth of Agua Azul.
Throughout the day helicopters flew over. One of them landed in Agua Azul and the crew met with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the area. At approximately 1400 hours the helicopter left. Soon after, the police chief and the representative of government, Jose Manuel Morales, passed by the booth, apparently to verify how many people there were.
The ejido informed Zapatista Radio that 12 truckloads of sectoral police were heading towards the Agua Azul crossroad. The convoy stopped because there was a road accident with two deaths. The ejido of San Sebastián Bachajón belived that as soon as the road was cleared the convoy would continue its path towards the toll booth, and feared a violent eviction.
The latest reports said that at about 9pm they were violently evicted, leaving several ejidatarios beaten. Given the situation, the ejidatarios fled to the mountain. Three hours after this violent eviction, ejidatarios were regrouping, however, there remain seven people unaccounted for.
Radio Zapatista calls on civil society to maintain a vigilant watch on the situation, and to be ready to act.
