Israel – Only country that legitimates torture

Israel – Only country that legitimates torture
Ahrar-Wledna
Saturday 30 June 2012

The Arab Organization for Human Rights in Britain affirmed that torture is a crime of serious violations of human rights whether committed against individuals or collectives. The organization expressed its worry and concerns, on the event of the World Day against Torture, 26th of June, in regards with the human rights violations against Palestinian people by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).

The organization revealed, in a statement which Ahrar-Wledna got a copy of, that Israeli occupation is the only country that legitimizes torture in its laws and courts.

The statements showed that the Israeli Knesset issued 40 discriminatory laws against Arab people in 2011.
It also revealed that violations committed by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians are not limited to specific social or political spectrums, but represent the opinions and ideologies of most of the Israeli society.

The statement showed that 53% of Jews encourage depopulating Palestinians of their home and 70% of Jews are opposed to including Arab parties in the government, and against employing Arabs in the governmental institutions.

It added that Arab athletes are also exposed to humiliation and physical and psychological torture in Football matches.

Akram Salameh, Palestinian ex-detainee, reported in a press conference on the event of the World Day against Torture, his witnessing of torture of Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli prisons while he was imprisoned.

He revealed that Israel adopts various methods of torture against Palestinian prisoners where some prisoners have died because of such violent practices.

Salameh added that prisoners are usually exposed to psychological pressure, deprivation of human rights, and severe torture resulting in their detah, such as Muhammad Abu Wahdan, Murad Abu Skut and Mahran Rajab.

He pointed out that the prison management in Jalbou Prison has adopted, during the last 5 years, all torture methods like beating, strip searches and electrocution against 475 prisoners.

He added that electrocution was used against 662 cases in Shattah Prison, 22 in Damon, 572 in Ramleh and Hasharon Prisons for female prisoners, 720 in Nafha, 317 in Rimon and 312 in Beer Sheba.

Salameh said that the number of martyrs who die inside prison exceeded 200 in the period between 1967 and 2011, including those died a few days after release like Zuhair Lubadah, who died recently.

He called all international institutions to work towards ending the suffering of Palestinian prisoners by stopping sanctioning Israel"s use of torture, and to work towards ending the violation of prisoners’ rights under security pretexts.
