Sergey Karyakin wins the International Chess Tournament SBERBANK OPEN
Sergey Karyakin won the International Chess Tournament Sberbank Open. This event, the first of its kind in Ukraine, held between 3 and 8 June in Kyiv was hosted by the nation’s main sporting venue, Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex. The Tournament was organized by Sberbank of Russia JSC.
Sberbank Open is included to the World Chess Federation (FIDE) tournament calendar and the unified schedule of physical education, health-improvement and cultural events of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
The Sberbank Open program included three separate tournaments: (for international grandmasters), B (children’s open), and (for Sberbank of Russia Group employees). This large-scale chess event brought together participants from 11 countries: Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Germany, India, and Turkey.
The super-tournament which featured ten world-renowned stars was won by the current rapid chess world champion Sergey Karyakin (Russia). The sixth FIDE world chess champion Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) was the runner-up, with the world crown challenger Péter Lékó (Hungary) finishing third.
Pavlo Vorontsov, 15-year old chess player from Kyiv, won the children’s open tournament B.
In the tournament for Sberbank of Russia Group employees, the winner was Vladimir Vinogradov from Petrozavodsk, Russia.
