1st World Scout Education Congress takes place in Hong Kong

World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) launches a new educational initiative 22-24 November 2013

22 November 2013, Hong Kong: The 1st World Scout Education Congress is taking place in Hong Kong from 22 to 24 November. The event gathers 500 participants and over 2000 on-line participants registered so far to contribute from all over the world. In this collaborative event the on-site and on-line participants equally participate in discussions. Thousands more are engaging through social media. The main theme of the Congress is “Scouting: Education for Life. What kind of education, what kind of life?”.

The Congress brings together leading Scout figures from the six Regions that make up World Scouting - to discuss their experiences and expertise in the Youth Programme and to debate Adult Resources in the 200 countries and territories where Scouting currently exists.

Scott Teare, Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, said: “Contributing to the education of young people has been our Mission for a long time and by sparking ideas and genuine engagement during this Congress we will bring Scouting’s capacity to deliver high quality education to the next level. We will also be discussing the role and impact of life-long education. This is about building sustainable knowledge and transferrable skills to be able to deliver on our vision “Creating a better world”.

The Opening Ceremony of the Congress was officiated by the President of Scout Association of Hong Kong, the Honourable Geoffrey MA Tao-li, GBM, Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal for Hong Kong. Ms Christine LOH, JP, Under Secretary for the Environment delivered a keynote address on education and Society following the Opening Ceremony.

João Armando Gonçalves, Member of the World Scout Committee (WSC) said: “The importance of this Congress goes beyond what each participant will be able to take home, to his/her National Scout Organization. This event is seen as a milestone for the future of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement and its over 40 million members. By bringing together so many people interested in, and committed to, the core business of Scouting, we have the unusual privilege of shaping the future of our Movement in terms of its educational mission.”

The Congress focuses on the core business of Scouting and the agenda revolves around three pillars:

• Youth Programme
• Adult Resources
• Impact of Scouting
