Ukrainian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Andrii Olefirov received UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson

On 5 March, 2014 Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Olefirov met with Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson.

Informing about the course of his visit to Ukraine Mr. Jan Eliasson highly assessed the results of his meetings with Ukraine’s leadership.

The two sides discussed current situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (ARC) as well as further involvement of the United Nations in its de-escalation.

Mr. Jan Eliasson emphasized the need for strict observance of such fundamental principle of the UN Charter as peaceful settlement of disputes, and confirmed the unconditional support by the United Nations of the national sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.

He also emphasized on the urgent need of establishing official Ukrainian - Russian dialogue in order to resolve situation in the ARC at soon as possible and praised the restraint exercised by the Ukrainian side in course of the conflict.

Mr. Andreii Olefirov on behalf of Ukrainian government conveyed gratitude to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon for his personal efforts aimed at settlement of situation in the Crimea.
