Habitat Concerned for Families That Only Have Tarps for Shelter

The national director of Habitat for Humanity in Fiji has expressed concerned for families without shelter, as locals prepare for a 6pm curfew and Tropical Cyclone Zina makes landfall.

“HFH Fiji has been actively involved in distributing emergency shelter kits in areas severely affected by Cyclone Winston since early March, and so far we’ve assisted more than 1300 families,” HFH Fiji national director Masi Latianara said.

“The current weather development has affected our distribution schedule. Teams were called back from flood affected areas in the Western division of Viti Levu as access to many roads is very limited.”

“Although we are still responding to TC Winston, HFH Fiji is ready to reach out to families in need of emergency relief supplies. Our greatest concern at this time is for the thousands of families that only have tarps for shelter.”

The fast-moving tropical cyclone Zina was first expected to hit Fiji’s mainland Viti Levu from midnight, Thursday, but the Fiji Meteorological Service released an updated advisory that it may begin to affect the islands from late this afternoon.

People can donate to the Habitat for Humanity disaster response fund at www.habitat.org.nz/donate.
