Philippe Mazuel Proposed As Replacement French European Commissioner

Philippe Mazuel, founding president of the pro-European party PACE, submitted his candidacy at the Élysée on Friday 11 October for a position as a European Commissioner for France.

Philippe Mazuel, 63, who was deputy mayor of Abbeville from 1989 to 1995, proposed on Friday, October 11, his candidacy for the post of European Commissioner, in place of Sylvie Goulard. The candidacy of the former French defense minister was rejected Thursday by MEPs.

President Emmanuel Macron is set to propose, before 17 October, a replacement for the post of European Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Digital, Defence and Space.

Broad areas of expertise that require qualities held by Philippe Mazuel, chairman of the party PACE (party of European citizens). In an open letter to Emmanuel Macron, recalling his career as well as his personal experience - marked by an private sector and experience serving French, European and international administrations.

"We must send to Brussels someone with Europe in his blood", he wrote. Philippe Mazuel is currently advisor to the Director General of Business Mediation, a department of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

"I did not hesitate for a single second and I'm happy to make this step," he said.

The names of Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, Florence Parly, Minister of Defence, Ségolène Royal, former Minister of the Environment, are quoted to replace Sylvie Goulard.

"But we should not propose a technocrat who spent his entire life in offices," warned Philippe Mazuel.

He underlines that his spontaneous candidacy is part of the movement instituted by Emmanuel Macron himself when he created his movement En marche! and then in the legislative elections of 2017.
