80% Of Samoan Voters Fully Registered - Electoral Office

Four out of five eligible voters in Samoa have now fully registered for the general election next month, the country's election chief has confirmed.

Samoa's electoral commissioner Toleafoa Tuiafelolo Alexander says based on the 2021 Census, 81 percent of all eligible voters - just under 95,000 out of 117,000 - have completed full registration, including biometrics and photos.

As of Tuesday, this left just over 22,000 remained to register.

In Samoa over 11,700 people registered online, and just under 7700 completed in-person registration as of Tuesday.

Three hundred and ten people registered online from outside Samoa, and just 58 of them have so far fully completed their registration.

The Office of the Electoral Commission (OEC) said online registration will close on Wednesday at 4pm local time (3pm NZT).

It said manual registration will be cosed on Thursday at 4pm.

"Completion of all outstanding registrations and biometric capture for submitted online applications will be closed on Friday at 4pm."

Samoans will cast their votes on 29 August.

The official campaigning period begins on 14 July.
