Partnership To Strengthen Care For Senior Citizens

SUVA, FIJI (February 10, 2026) – Habitat for Humanity Fiji has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Housing Assistance Relief Trust (HART) to demonstrate practical, scalable solutions that respond to the growing housing and care needs of Fiji’s ageing population.

As Fiji’s population ages, access to safe, appropriate housing and supportive care is becoming increasingly critical to community wellbeing and resilient social systems. Investing in dignified ageing reduces vulnerability, strengthens families, preserves community knowledge, and reinforces inclusive development ensuring no one is left behind.

Through this collaboration, Habitat Fiji will provide technical expertise and construction support to upgrade and revitalize a residential care facility for senior citizens in Valelevu, Suva. The initiative is designed not only to improve living conditions, but also to model how existing infrastructure can be adapted to meet the specialized needs of elderly persons.

The HART Housing Community has a strong history of supporting vulnerable families and continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community. Building on this foundation, the project will revitalise existing infrastructure through targeted upgrades that enhance comfort, safety, and accessibility for senior citizens. The apartment units will be improved with universal design features, including wider doorways, low-height counters, grab bars, and safer bathroom layouts creating a secure, inclusive, and dignified living environment for older persons.

Dedicated staff quarters will also be upgraded to enable on-site support, strengthen facility management, and ensure timely care for residents. Shared spaces will be enhanced to promote safety, wellbeing, and social connection within the community.

Beyond the physical improvements, this partnership seeks to influence how senior housing is approached in Fiji, demonstrating how collaboration between housing and social service actors can deliver practical, people-centred solutions that integrate shelter, care, and community support.

“As Fiji’s population continues to age, the need for safe, accessible, and supportive housing for senior citizens becomes increasingly urgent. This collaboration with HART demonstrates how partnerships can deliver sustainable, people-centred solutions that improve quality of life while strengthening community care systems. Together, we are creating an inclusive living environment where senior citizens can age with dignity and security.”— Sangita Kumar, Interim National Director, Habitat for Humanity Fiji
