We Remember Hugo Chavez, A Visionary Leader Of The Oppressed

5TH March, 2026 marks the 13th anniversary of the painful death of El-commandant Hugo Chavez, and we, at the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity (HCIF-PFS) honour the legacy of this iconic revolutionary leader for what he stood and died for. His sacrifice and that of others who fought for freedom, social justice and homeland dignity remind us that the battle was never won on a silver platter.

On this sombre occasion, we stand in solidarity with the Bolivarian Socialist Revolutionary government and noble people of Venezuela, the Chavez family, and all who hold the memory of Hugo Chavez in reverence. Hugo Chavez life was short-lived, he died on 5th March, 2013 after suffering from a strange illness that was concluded as a high-tech assassination planned and clinically executed by those who wanted him out of the scene. He is remembered as the people’s President and iconic revolutionary leader who deeply understood the heartbeat of the common man and dedicated his political life to homeland dignity and improvement of the lives of the poor.

As we join the millions if not billions of people around the world in solidarity, we have set aside this day annually to reflect on the noble service, dedication and the legacy bequeathed us. On this day, today, we pay tribute also to the likes of Commandant Fidel Castro, Ernesto Che Guevara, Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah, Bishop Maurice, Samora Machel, Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara, recognizing their contributions to freedom and human dignity, and for standing firm in the face of vicious attacks from adversaries.

Across Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa, sovereignty and homeland dignity face challenges. The resilience of the Cuban people reminds us that a people united by a common vision can never be defeated. And as we remember Hugo Chavez, let us recall his fight for sovereignty and homeland dignity. The best way to remember Hugo Chavez is to defend and preserve his legacy.

Once again, we say ‘Rest in absolute peace, Commandant Hugo Chavez’!
