NACI Statement On 40th Anniversary Of Brutal Bombing Of Libya

15th April, 2026

The New African Charter International (NACI) enjoins Africans across the continent and abroad to observe April 15 as a day of remembrance and tribute to the victims of state-sponsored terrorism on African soil. This day is a reminder of our collective patriotism and resolved to stand together in solidarity with all victims of terrorism, be it in Africa or elsewhere, to honour their memory, and to affirm commitment to eradicate this menace in all its forms and manifestations anywhere it gives expression.

Africa has been a direct victim of state-sponsored terrorism, including the ongoing terrorism against Africans in the Sahel region, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan and Somalia. It is an obvious fact that terrorism in Africa is tailored and clinically executed by those who seek to recolonise the continent. Africa faces new forms of terrorism, including death-trapped foreign loans, vicious charity, fake news, disinformation and misinformation campaigns, imposed wars, hate-filled, violence and state-sponsored extra-territorial assassination campaigns, and climate terrorism.

Forty (40) years ago today, on 15th April, 1986 the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) led by the United States of America under President Donald Reagan launched a barbaric and unprovoked terrorist attack on the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. On that day, the world witnessed unimaginable horror unleashed on African soil.

Today, we remember and honour every African whose life was cut short or forever changed by a terrorist attack, and we continue to pray for the families still suffering today across Africa due to hostile foreign policies that threatened our environment and existence. Their sacrifice stands as an enduring symbol of Africa’s rededication to the fight against terrorism in all its forms or manifestations.

Though 40 years have elapsed since the barbaric terror attack on the African soil in Libya, the passage of time has not diminished the pain felt by Africans whose compatriots perished on that fateful day. The US-NATO attack sent shocking waves across the continent and this constituted an assault on the peaceful and freedom-loving people of Africa, and aggression on the right of Libya, which sought to exercise sovereignty and independence.

As we remember the victims, this tragic anniversary underscores the urgent call for collective efforts and political will to eradicate the menace of terrorism out of Africa. On the anniversary of the April 15 heinous terrorist attack on Libya, therefore, NACI wants to remind the global community that the sacrifices of Africa in the fight against terrorism have been noted down and kept for historians to write home about. These sacrifices remain an enduring reminder of Africa’s frontline role and unwavering commitment to destroy terrorism.

On this day, we reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the oppressed people of Israeli-Illegally occupied Palestine, Lebanon, and, as well as the good people of Venezuela and Cuba, who continue to endure the worst form of state-terrorism. For decades, progressive leaders in Africa (32 African leaders) have been assassinated by foreign powers, and millions of innocent Africans have been subjected to systematic killings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and horrible human rights violations, which are not covered or reported by the foreign media.

Similarly, we extend our deepest tribute to the resilient people of Iran, Palestine and Lebanon, who continue to suffer relentless aggression, systemic human rights violations, and state terrorism at the hands of Israeli occupation forces. These heinous crimes and crimes against humanity are unleashed on the Palestinian population, with impunity.

On this day, our belief in the strength of solidarity, unity and Pan Africanism Revolution is reaffirmed in our determination to fight against violent extremism and keep Africa safe for generations of Africans. Every passing day, we stand against hate, intolerance, racism, oppression, degradation and dehumanisation. More so, NACI stands united against antisemitism in all its forms, and with all Africans both at home and around the world.

NACI will always stand with Africans in the Sahel region, Africans in the diasporas, with Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and all other countries and nations that love and advocate peace, stability and justice. We will stand for the rights of the masses of the Libyan people, and against the menace of terrorism.

As we remember the victims of terrorism today, we call upon the international community to accelerate collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening international partnership, dialogue, and cooperation to eliminate the menace of terrorism. NACI also calls for the global community to support the victims of terrorism and their families, and to contribute to a peaceful and secure world.

Long live Libya!
