The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Friday:
Situation: A southwest flow covers the country. On Tuesday a front embedded in the flow moves onto the lower South Island. On Thursday a high in the Tasman Sea pushes a ridge onto the North Island and a northwest flow develops over the South Island. On Friday the high lies over the north of the North Island and a westerly flow covers the remainder of the country.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI and TARANAKI: Cloud and fine breaks with a few showers and southwest winds from today through until Wednesday. On Thursday, mostly fine with light frosts in sheltered places. Cloud and showers developing south of Waitomo on Friday but remaining mostly fine elsewhere.
COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: A few light showers about the central high country today otherwise fine. Mainly fine tomorrow. A few cloudy periods on Wednesday then fine again on Thursday and Friday.
TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A few light showers in Taihape clearing today otherwise fine. A few showers and fine breaks tomorrow and Wednesday. Mainly fine on Thursday. Cloud increasing Friday with showers and westerlies.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mainly fine today apart from a few cloudy periods about the coast. Fine tomorrow. Coastal showers on Wednesday. Cloud and fine breaks on Thursday with a few light showers about Gisborne clearing later. Mostly fine on Friday with westerly winds.
WELLINGTON: Mostly fine today and tomorrow. A few showers on Wednesday with southerlies freshening then becoming fine on Thursday. A few cloudy periods on Friday with northerly winds.
NELSON: Mainly fine today through until Friday apart from a few showers early Wednesday. Southwest winds predominating.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: A few showers about Banks Peninsula today otherwise fine. Mainly fine tomorrow. A few early showers clearing on Wednesday then fine again Thursday. Mainly fine Friday apart from some high cloud inland and west to northwest winds.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: A few showers about the Fiords today otherwise fine. Showers spread further north tomorrow then clear on Wednesday. On Thursday, fine apart from a few cloudy periods and west to northwest winds. Patchy rain about Fiordland on Friday with cloudy skies elsewhere.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Cloudy periods with a few showers about the south coast today. Showers becoming more frequent and widespread tomorrow with southwesterlies freshening. Coastal showers on Wednesday but becoming fine inland. Mainly fine on Thursday but high cloud on Friday with patchy rain developing about the western ranges.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Cold and showery today through until Thursday with gusty southwest winds. On Friday, a mix of cloud and fine breaks with westerlies developing.
