Weather Workshop: 5 day forecast for NZ

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Tuesday:

Situation: A high covers the country today and tomorrow. On Sunday the high drifts east of the country and allows a low in the Tasman Sea to start moving onto the lower South Island and a moist northerly flow develops over the country. On Monday a front associated with the low crosses the country and is followed by a disturbed westerly flow. On Tuesday westerlies remain over most of the country but a cooler southerly change moves onto the lower South Island.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA TAUPO, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU Mainly fine today and tomorrow, Some cloud developing late Saturday. Cloud increasing Sunday in the north and west with late rain to Northland and a few patchy falls to Taranaki. Showers or rain to most places on Monday with northwest winds. A few showers but long fine breaks also on Tuesday with westerly winds.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: A few showers clearing about Gisborne today, mainly fine further south Mainly fine tomorrow and Sunday. Cloudy at times on Monday with patchy rain spreading from the main ranges later and north to northwest winds. On Tuesday, remaining rain areas clearing and becoming fine with westerly winds.

WELLINGTON: Fine today and tomorrow. Sunday sees an increase in wind from the north then late showers. Outbreaks of rain and gusty northerlies on Monday, clearing late in the day. Cloud and fine breaks on Tuesday with north to northwest winds.

NELSON: Conditions fine and settled until later Saturday then cloud increasing. Patchy rain and northerlies Sunday. Showers and northwesterlies on Monday. Cloud and fine breaks on Tuesday with west to southwest winds.

MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: mainly fine today and tomorrow. Some high cloud developing later on Saturday. High cloud thickening Sunday but dry in most places, rain later to the main divide. Patchy rain spreading off the alps from time to time on Monday with gusty northwest winds. Becoming fine on Tuesday with northwesterlies easing then showers and southerlies spread into south Canterbury late in the day.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Cloudy periods today with patchy rain likely south of Haast. Patchy rain becoming more general south of the glaciers tomorrow then spreading further north late in the day. More persistent and heavier falls expected Sunday and Monday with strengthening northerlies. Rain easing to showers on Tuesday with cooler southwesterlies developing in Fiordland.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Cloudy at times today but remaining dry. Cloud thickening tomorrow with patchy rain about the western ranges. Sunday, rain about the western ranges but only a few falls further east. Rain to most places on Monday with northwesterlies turning westerly. Showers and cool southwesterlies develop on Tuesday.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Showers today. Cloudy and dry over the weekend with light winds. On Monday a few showers and northwest winds. Showers turning to rain on Tuesday with northwesterlies strengthening.
