Central Hawke's Bay: Stay Safe for A&P Show

To be released immediately 6 November 2009

The Central Hawke’s Bay A & P Show is a fantastic event where everybody enjoys themselves – and some more than others!

Central Hawke’s Bay District Council in partnership with the Police are asking people who are going to enjoy the “Show” weekend to be responsible and remember the liquor ban in and around Waipukurau.

It is an offence to bring alcohol into, possess liquor, or consume alcohol in and around public areas in Waipukurau and also in any vehicle while in a public place. However there are some commonsense exceptions eg. whilst transporting alcohol purchased at a liquor store inside the specified area to your home etc.

This bylaw is enforced by the Police who have the powers to search containers and vehicles and to seize alcohol found in the specified area. There are powers of arrest if people found committing as offence. The maximum penalty for anyone convicted of an offence under the bylaw is a fine up to $20,000.00. Signs are visible throughout the public places of Waipukurau.

These signs will inform the public that they are either entering or inside the specified area.

These signs also indicate what powers the Police have available to enforce the alcohol ban.
