Terror attack – 250 officers and staff dedicated to enquiry

"Christchurch terror attack – 250 officers and support staff dedicated to enquiry"

Please attribute to Police Commissioner Mike Bush:

The enquiry into the Christchurch terror attacks has the largest number of detectives and specialists we have ever deployed on an investigation.

We have more than 250 officers and support staff dedicated to this enquiry.

This is now an international investigation which includes staff from the FBI and Australian Federal Police on the ground in New Zealand, as well as investigators assisting in Australian states.

There is no indication at this stage that anyone else was directly involved in the attack – we believe this horrific act was committed by one person.

The national threat level remains high, and our vigilance and visible presence will continue at this time.

This is precautionary and for the safety and reassurance of everyone.

Today the Prime Minister announced an inquiry into the attack, a move we at Police welcome.

It is important we learn any lessons we can from this tragedy.

She also spoke about surrendering firearms.

As per existing processes we are happy for people to surrender their firearms to Police.

We would ask that they please call their local Police Station or Arms officer first for advice on the safe transport of the firearm to Police and to alert our staff ahead of time, given the current situation.

Finally, I want to thank the public for their overwhelmingly positive feedback and messages of support.

I know it is greatly appreciated by our staff who work tirelessly to keep our community safe.
